Fierce Town

Set against the dramatic backdrop of the mid-12th century, the boundaries of the Mongolian Empire expanded from the Adriatic and Mediterranean Seas in the west to the southern lands of China in the east. Under the leadership of Khan Batu, the Mongolian army became legendary for its ability to move unseen, annihilating anyone who dared defy them. However, within the core of their territories, some regions remained defiant against the Genghisids. Among these was Kozelsk, a small town whose formidable walls made the Mongolian forces decide it wasn’t worth the risk of battle. Yet, a vendetta held by one of Khan’s commanders placed the town in the crosshairs, forcing Kozelsk’s residents to contend with the world’s mightiest army with little hope for success. This narrative explores how people confront their mortality; some attempt escape, others will do whatever it takes to live, but most are steadfast in defending their home from unyielding Mongol forces.
