In the harsh winter of January 1943, Admiral Karl Dönitz leads the Nazi U-boat fleet against Britain, threatening to starve the nation by destroying nearly a thousand merchant ships. This perilous situation puts the Allies at risk of losing their vital transatlantic shipping routes, which are crucial for maintaining a foothold in Western Europe. To counter this, the Royal Navy enlists the expertise of retired war gamer Gilbert Roberts. Tasked with deciphering and countering Dönitz’s strategies through war gaming, Roberts requires a team but finds no available military personnel. Undeterred, he boldly enlists the Women’s Royal Navy Service (WRNS) for this critical mission, risking mockery from the top brass. Working alongside trailblazer Jean Laidlaw, one of Britain’s pioneering female chartered accountants, and a small cadre of ingenious female mathematicians, Roberts reenacts naval engagements and strategizes U-boat maneuvers using chalk and model ships on a linoleum floor.
